Ed Solomon's busy days; Universal's new blood

Homing in on the truth

Finally!  One of our sources in Hollywood responded with some hopeful news on the two script treatments supposedly being worked on by Ed Solomon.  While our source had not heard the latest rumors, he is good friends with Solomon, and promised to inquire for us on these reports the next time he sees or speaks to him.  Don't know when this will be, nor what will come of it, but rest assured our source will indeed get to the bottom of all this for us if he can.
Ed Solomon really does have a lot on his plate at the moment.  Everywhere you look, there are casting news bits & rumors concerning the upcoming films X-men and Charlie's Angels, both of  which were written by Solomon.  With the June 14th deadline quickly approaching for him to turn in his treatments for BTTF 4/5, one can't help but wonder how he's going to pull all this off.
There are some great interviews with Ed Solomon on the internet, which gives an interesting look at his style of writing and what he's all about.  Check out the E-mail Interview with Ed Solomon and Ed Solomon's Excellent Adventure for an intriguing look at the man who may be responsible to reviving our series.
Have you seen the trailer to Will Smith's Wild Wild West?  After reviewing it a few times and reading the two articles above and recalling how much I enjoyed Men in Black, it got me to thinking about what our studio scooper said about Solomon's use of Doc & Clara in his treatments.  If Solomon sends Doc and his family back to the Old West (since Doc's already been back to the fututure), can you imagine a new Future along the lines of Wild Wild West?!  I just love that train, which looks and feels like something Doc would create.  Ah, the possibilities here are endless, my friends....

New co-chairmen at Universal?

Studio Briefing reported yesterday that Universal Pictures may be close to announcing two replacements for ousted former chairman, Casey Silver.  The report quotes the New York Daily News as stating that Production President Stacey Snider and Finance Chief Brian Mulligan will jointly be responsible for the studio's film division.  A formal announcement is expected sometime next week.

Sequel mainia at Universal

Hot on the heels of the box-office success of The Mummy (which broke the $100 million mark yesterday), comes word of additional sequels in the works at Universal.  As reported earlier, sequel talks for a second Mummy were ongoing almost immediately after the opening weekend.  Now comes word that Universal may be considering a third Flintstones movie, and the second one is currently in production.  Cinescape reported yesterday that the producer for The Flintstones: Viva Rock Vegas is already considering another film with the new cast based on how well the new film is turning out.  Hopefully, this indicates that Universal is indeed in high-gear on producing in-house projects based on company-owned properties, and that the proposed BTTF 4/5 projects have a serious chance of getting produced.

Next Zemeckis film slated to begin in August

Cinescape reported that Robert Zemeckis' next film, What Lies Beneath, is now slated to begin production in mid-August.  The film, which stars Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer, will shoot in Los Angeles and Vermont.  The report gave a bit more details about the plotline: the story surrounds the murder of a female graduate student who appears as a ghostly spirit to Pfeiffer's character asking for help.

Is Shue in the “House” or not?

We last reported that Eric Stoltz had signed on to the film, The House of Mirth, which Elisabeth Shue had been attached to the film since February '98.  Cinescape now reports that the film is already in production in Scotland with Gillian Anderson in the lead role.  While our sources state that Anderson is indeed attached to the film, all of our information indicates that Shue is still attached to the film, and that it does not begin production until July.  Cinescape's report focused on the news that the film would go straight to cable, being broadcast on Showtime instead of being released theatrically.  Shue is presently filming The Hollow Man, which would definitely prohibit her from starring in The House of Mirth if it is indeed shooting at this time.

New voice for “Atlantis”

Coming Attractions reported a few days ago that Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, will lend his voice to Disney's Atlantis, which will also feature the voice of Michael J. Fox.  Hamill is no stranger to mixing Star Wars with Back to the Future: he starred alongside Tom Wilson in three wildly successful Wing Commander CD-ROM interactive games.  The report gives 2001 as Disney's target release date for their 40th feature-length animated film.
