New director for “Jurassic Park 3”; “Man on the Moon” screening

Project updates

Not much news right now on the proposed BTTF 4/5 sequels project, so while we're waiting for the June 14 deadline to arrive so that we can (hopefully) get an update from our Hollywood insider on the project status, here's an update on various projects the cast & crew are involved with:

JURASSIC PARK 3:  This project was announced nearly a year ago with a projected Summer 2000 release date, but seeing as the project has not even begun pre-production yet, that target may not be feasible any longer.  It's long been known that Steven Spielberg has no desires to direct this installment, but no replacement had ever been mentioned — until now.  According to the Dark Horizons website, Stephen Sommers — the director of Universal's recent smash hit, The Mummy — is being considered for top honors on this installment.  While Spielberg won't be directing, he is expected to return as an Executive Producer, as is Kathleen Kennedy.

Man on the Moon MAN ON THE MOON:  There has been a lot of talk in the past few days about this highly anticipated film about the life of comedian Andy Kaufman.  The Ain't It Cool News website has been discussing marketing concerns at Universal, who has been under fire by the site because they are contemplating making drastic editing cuts in the Jim Carey film.  Today the site reports that the first screening of the film recently took place in San Francisco, with some interesting reviews.  There's even a mention of Christopher Lloyd, who appears briefly in the film with the rest of the Taxi cast reprising themselves from 20 years ago on the show.  The reviews have some minor spoilers, so proceed to this link only if you don't mind learning some of the plot and details of the film.

JUMANJI 2:  According to Cinescape Online, BTTF Visual Effects Supervisor Ken Ralston will finally get his chance to make his directorial debut on the sequel to the 1995 hit film.  Ralston, who also currently serves as the President of Imageworks for Sony Pictures, was to have made his directorial debut a few years ago on a film called Dinotopia, but for whatever reasons, the deal fell through.  Production is expected to begin this fall, for a projected Christmas 2000 release.

THE BBC:  In Hollywood reports this morning that Billy Zane will be producing an independent drama called The BBC, about a diabetic teenage prostitute who falls in love with a blind artist, embarking on a life of crime in order to steal enough money to fund the surgery required to restore his sight.  Zane, who has also produced several of his own films in the past, is not yet listed as a cast member, but I wouldn't be surprised if he is added to the yet-unannounced cast in the near future.  The film is in active development, and will shoot on location in San Francisco.
