Everybody wants a piece of the “BTTF4/5” action

Sequel news getting wide-spread attention

Whoa!  I'm utterly overwhelmed with the way the news of the two sequels has taken off in recent days and weeks.  My email account has been flooded with questions about the pending sequels, as you can imagine, as other movie news sites pick up the rumors.  My thanks goes out to the webmasters in charge of the Corona's Coming Attractions, Cinema Confidential, and Dark Horizons websites for their non-biased coverage of the news on their respective sites in recent days and the past few weeks.
Tuesday, after weeks of sending the same information we sent to all the other sites, Cinescape Online finally acknowledged the existence of the BTTF4 rumors, but quickly dismissed them because the "Insider" briefly spoke to a representative at Amblin a few weeks ago, who claimed they didn't know of such a project.  Ooh — big surprise, huh?  Well, our source reminded me of what they had said back on May 15th about denial by all parties involved, adding:
"Amblin will deny existence of BTTF4/5 until it officially goes into pre-production.  Until then, they are legally obligated to say otherwise."
At the same time, my source did clear up my earlier confusion about Charles S. Haas:
"Charles S. Haas is the other writer I mentioned previously.  Charlie has been contracted to further develop the project, as I told you, but hasn't officially signed anything with Amblin or Universal.  He's working as an independent contract of sorts — he is listed under the mundane title of 'Assistance'.  That's it."
In my quest for digging up as much information as I possibly can find on the new sequels, I discovered a startling fact:  some very hopeful individuals have registered already the domain names for the two upcoming sequels.  On May 28th, one individual took it upon himself to register nearly every conceivable combination for Back to the Future 4backtothefuture4.com, backtothefutureiv.com, backtothefuture4.net, backtothefutureiv.net, backtothefuture4.org, and backtothefutureiv.org.  And earlier this week on June 7, another individual registered backtothefuture5.com, only to register backtothefuture5.net the following day.  It's really sad to see that there are people out there trying to cash in on this by registering all the obvious domain names apparently for the sole purpose of reselling them back to the studios for major profit.  However, I believe these registrants will really be the ones sad when they learn that they've actually spent their money ($420 and $140, respectively) at InterNIC in vain, if that really was their intent.  It's my understanding that the Internet promotional strategies are already being mapped out with a completely different domain name in mind for use to promote both movies.

Trilogy DVD update:  1999 release date afterall?

We've received the following additional details on the upcoming DVD releases for the first three BTTF films:
Back to the Future: Collector's Edition
  • The Back to the Future: Collector's Edition will be released on November 16th.
  • Universal's ad campaign will be called "The Future is Back!", and will appear on their video slate in late 1999 along with Notting Hill and The Mummy.
  • Specific features will include:
    • Random Scene Access
    • Widescreen / Pan & Scan
    • Newly Restored Digital Soundtrack
    • Commentaries by Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Robert Zemeckis, Bob Gale, and Thomas F. Wilson
    • Three Deleted Scenes
    • Original Storyboards
    • Conceptual Artwork
    • And a few surprises...
  • The DVD will be packaged with a watch that runs backwards.
  • The DVDs for BTTF2 and BTTF3 will follow a few weeks later.
Of course, this date contradicts what I was told just last week that they wouldn't be out until sometime in 2000.  I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
I'm not sure at this point what the "surprises" are, but I'm guessing that they have something to do with the Eric Stoltz photographs previously mentioned.  I also have no knowledge yet as to what the three deleted scenes are that will be included, but I have my suspicions.
