Back to the Future headed to the smaller screen?
Coming to a computer near you
According to various sources at Universal and DreamWorks/Amblin, plans are apparently underway to not let the 15th anniversary of the Back to the Future series go by unnoticed. There's been some talk under these companies' roofs over the past few months about possibly re-releasing the first film to theaters next summer, as well as issuing various limited edition collectibles.
I've learned that among the merchandise to be released, there is a brand new Back to the Future game now in development for release on CD-ROM. At this time, I do not have any specifics on the game, but I am told that it will definitely include some live-action, which I assume means will include one or more of the series' actors reprising their film roles for the game. The game may possibly be released on Nintendo 64 as well.
No word yet as to what the other merchandise may entail. However, Icons Authentic Replicas, who holds the exclusive license to reproduce BTTF prop replicas, have long had plans to release certain BTTF related props. These plans, delayed indefinitely since 1997, included replicas of the Mattel hoverboard, Gray's Sports Almanac, and Mr. Fusion Home Energy Reactor. Perhaps these plans will finally materialize in light of all the new events surrounding the franchise.
Little by little, Back to the Future is making a comeback. It's quietly seeping back into the public's subconscious, and I anticipate that over the course of the next year, the 15-year-old BTTF franchise will once again be all the rage as momentum builds towards the release of the new sequels.
It all began late last year when Johnny Lightning released a superb DeLorean time machine die-cast in their Hollywood on Wheels line. While the DVD versions of all three Back to the Future films have been delayed time and time again, they still remain among the most highly anticipated titles for release on DVD (still set for release this Christmas, as far as we know). Varèse Sarabande will also release a new Trilogy CD featuring a mixture of previously released and unreleased music from all three films and ...The Ride, supposedly by the end of the summer. I'm sure there are many other merchandise tie-ins planned or already in the works, and as always, only time will tell what they include.
New time travel vehicle at Universal Studios Hollywood
Just got the following photographs from one of our friends at Universal Studios Hollywood. Apparently, Doc Brown's been busy building a new time travel vehicle for recreational use. Boy, I'd hate to try to get that up to 88 mph! [Thanks to 'Mr. Fusion' for the photos!']
Project updates
INSTANT KARMA:
Adding to the tower of projects Robert Zemeckis is attached to, Instant Karma is a comedy about a typical Hollywood player who, searching for enlightenment, samples a variety of religions in order to choose the right one. Zemeckis will produce the film, now in active development, under his ImageMovers banner.
WHAT LIES BENEATH:
A scooper to the Dark Horizons website reveals that the exact location where filming is to take place on Robert Zemeckis' next film is the D.A.R. Ranch in Addison County, Vermont. The production crew has built a haunted home in a remote location on Lake Champlain. Filming is set to begin in August.
