Cast showing sequel interest?  A new “Ride”?

Cast & Crew interest already tapped for sequels

In my never-ending quest for inside knowledge on what's going on with the BTTF franchise, I realize I must seem like a leech to my contacts as I pry deeper & deeper for more intriguing details.  So far, I haven't gotten anyone upset with me as far as I can tell for asking too many questions, so I guess persistence does pay off.  Anyway, when I recently inquired as to whether any of the previous cast and crew had been contacted yet concerning their interest in the projects, I was given the following response:
Christopher Lloyd and Mary Steenburgen "There are no official producers on this project yet, but their interest has been tapped.  For the record, Mary Steenburgen said she's interested in reading the scripts; Christopher Lloyd said 'only if Bob Zemeckis is involved'; and Michael J. Fox hasn't been contacted at all, although he is mentioned twice in the treatments.  Any sign of interest is a good sign, especially once money discussions begin.  Writers for sequels are generally given a guideline and often get help from the higher-ups by placing phone calls to their reps and/or agents.  Nine times out of ten, a sequel will go ahead with the principals involved, yet with the option of writing them out.  Sequels are a lot harder to write than people think — they're heavily watched by the studio heads and can be exceptionally nerve-wracking on the writer.  That's why the majority of new screenwriters in Hollywood are hired to do sequels."

"In terms of BTTF4/5, Ed Solomon wanted to write about Doc Brown and Clara.  Solomon had no input from Universal and/or Amblin whatsoever.  In this case, if Lloyd opts not to join, BTTF4/5 is dead.  Simple as that — and we'll file it away as another 'project that almost was'."

We've known all along that the future of the new sequels hinged on Christopher Lloyd's interest and participation.  We just don't know to what extent Robert Zemeckis' involvement is required for Lloyd to sign on.  Lloyd has gone on record before that he'd certainly be willing to reprise Doc Brown once again.  In the August 1993 issue of  STARLOG, he was quoted as saying, "I just loved Doc Brown. He was a whole visionary character that I really got off on."  When the magazine asked then if he had been approached about doing a fourth Future film, he said that he hadn't, but would be happy to do it.
At least we now know that Michael J. Fox is being considered for at least a minor role in the films!  I did notice that there was no mention of Marty as being the character mentioned in the treatments, so Fox's participation could very well be that of portraying one of Marty's relatives or ancestors, as previously reported in Total Film.
No word yet as to exactly who the producers are who have been contacted about their interest in the films.

Sources say next century to bring new ridefilm for 3 “Rides”

Last October, we received a small tip that a brand new film was going to be produced for the upcoming Back to the Future...The Ride at Universal Studios Japan, but little detail was provided, and we brushed it off as a mere rumor or that our scooper had their facts mixed up.  Earlier this week, the same news was reported to us by a different source, which led me to believe that there must be something to this afterall.
Tom Wilson, Mary Steenburgen and Michael J. Fox at USF Ride opening on May 1, 1991 "I hear after Universal Studios Florida completes all touch-ups at the new Islands of Adventure park, and finishes the Men in Black Ride in the Summer of 2000, they are going to change the BTTF ride.  Yes, I am serious.  I have heard from a reliable source that the film in the ride will be brand new, and some outside remodeling may also be in the works.  This new ride should be running by Summer 2002, or maybe even sooner..."  [Thanks to 'Mittman' for the scoop]
After receiving this news, I checked with a source to see if there was any truth to this report.  After all, I've assumed all along that the new ride planned for Japan would simply be the same ride we're all familiar with in Orlando and Hollywood, so it wouldn't make sense to debut a new film at Florida a year after the old film debuts at Japan.  Well, lo and behold — it turns out to be completely true (and I'm taught yet another lesson in why I should never assume anything)!
"One of the Amblin-BTTF projects since 1997 has been a new BTTF motion ride.  It was developed primarily for the Japanese Universal Studios.  Three unit directors are being lined up to direct new footage for the ride, including the waiting-in-line footage.  Motion rides, as you probably know, are just projected on a huge circular screen, allowing 15-20 cars to see the same image, as if it's right in front of them.  Not so.  Once the Japanese version bows, it's going to be transferred to Florida first, then the Hollywood one.  (This will take place during the fourth week that the MiB Experience bows.)
Back to the Future...The Ride
Whoa — this is indeed heavy!  It's hard to believe, but when the Japan ride opens, it will be 10 years since the original Ride opened in Florida, which is a great run for any themepark attraction.  Ten years seems to be the normal life-span of any good film-based themepark attraction (remember Captain EO?), and Back to the Future...The Ride has certainly served us well.  When I toured the inside of ...The Ride at USF in 1997, it was clear to me then that the design and structure of this attraction allowed for multiple programs — a change of film and reprogramming of the hydraulics system of the 8-passenger DeLoreans, and presto — a new attraction.  Looks like 2001 will bring yet another reason for BTTF fans to look forward to the future!
However, this brings up an interesting question of concern.  What will happen to the original film?  Will it be released to home video?  It would certainly be an excellent candidate for a DVD release.  Also, will the attraction still be known as Back to the Future...The Ride, or will it get a new name?  These are just a few questions I hope we'll get satisfactory answers to in the near future.  Meanwhile, I strongly suggest to all fans who have not yet been on ...The Ride to do so before this one is gone for good.  This is one time where a time traveling DeLorean won't take you to the past.
With this new project already in the works, I would assume (here I go again) that Christopher Lloyd would be vital to that project's success as was the first one.  Zemeckis had very little involvement in the first Ride, and Lloyd signed on to that project (as did Tom Wilson).  Maybe Marty will make an appearance in this one?  Guess we'll just have to see what develops over the natural course of time.

First sequel script expected in mid-September
Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio

I've learned some new interesting details concerning the script treatments for BTTF4/5 written by Ed Solomon, which are currently being expanded into provisional scripts by the writing team of Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio.  It turns out that the script for BTTF4 is due to be handed in on September 14, with the script for BTTF5 expected to be delivered about a month later.  This is a bit later than I had originally expected, but we at least now a general time frame as to when an announcement from Universal & Amblin hopefully would be coming — early fall.
My source also hints of some possible good news too — the Solomon treatments have now been transferred to the infamous heat-sensitive, Xerox-proof paper that is commonplace in Hollywood today for high-profile projects.  I'm told that past treatments and scripts that have gone through this extreme security measure have always been produced — definitely a good omen for these two new sequels!
Also, I'm told that the BTTF4/5 sequels now have official titles, although my source hasn't learned what they exactly are at this moment.  I do understand that the word "Future" is in there somewhere, but that's all I've been able to find out at the moment.

Back to the big screen for Back to the Future Part II
Back to the Future Part II

If you live anywhere in the Somerdale, New Jersey area, you have a brief opportunity to catch a very limited engagement of BTTF2 on the big screen once again.  The Cinemark 16 theater in Somerdale will be screening Part II this weekend on Friday and Saturday nights, along with original trailers to all three films.  [Thanks to 'Dave' for the news!]
