Crispin's Angels?
Is Crispin Glover the new Angels boss, Charlie?
When the brand new teaser trailer for Sony's upcoming television-to-big-screen feature film Charlie's Angels debuted on the net last week, I immediately noticed something very peculiar. That silhouetted figure who struts down the neon-lighted tunnel, whom the narrator implies is the infamous "Charlie", strikes an uncanny resemblence to the facial structure and body mannerisms of Crispin Glover.
It's certainly been no secret that Crispin has a role in the film, but to date, we do not know exactly what character that might be. Originally, it had been rumored that he was playing one of the lead baddies, and as far as we know, that is still the case. Charlie has always been a voice projected through a desk speaker to the Angels, not a flesh & blood person you would ever seen on screen beyond a fleeting glimpse of the back of his head. I'd assume that this would remain as such in the film version, but who knows what this new version holds in store for audiences? The trailer does raise some unanswered questions, but I suppose that's why they call them "teasers".
As "Charlie" strolls down the tunnel, it's quite obvious that this is a younger man than what usually comes to mind when you think of the character. It's certainly not the outline of 82-year-old John Forsythe, the voice of the original Charlie Townsend in the popular '70s television series. While it's long been rumored that Forsythe would lend his voice as Charlie for the film version, and his voice is indeed heard ever so briefly at the end of the trailer, there has been no confirmation as of yet from Sony as to who exactly is portraying the title character. Click on the link above to view the trailer, take a look at the photo above, and you decide. We'll certainly report anything new we may learn on Crispin's participation in this big budget feature.
The film, which began shooting on January 10 of this year, is scheduled to wrap principle photography any day now (if it hasn't already), and is tentively slated to hit theaters on November 3, 2000.
Nurse Betty a big hit in Cannes
Speaking of Crispin Glover, sounds like he has another hit on his hands, as another film he has coming out this fall, Nurse Betty, has been getting rave reviews at the Cannes Film Festival. Nurse Betty screened May 12 in the official competition, and reportedly has those involved in the film very excited for its potential success when it is released theatrically by New Line Cinema later this year.
Co-star Chris Rock, who was in attendance at the screening, reportedly was so overwhelmed by the audience's cheers, that he phoned his mother on the spot and let her hear the cheers as they were happening.
The dark comedy is about a Kansas waitress who has a breakdown after witnessing a pair of drug dealers brutally murder her husband. The event traumatizes her to the point where she decides that her favorite character on her favorite soap opera is her long-lost fiance, and races to Hollywood to find him, while the two mobsters pursue her. The film ended principle photography over a year ago on March 22, 1999 after shooting on location in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Rome.
No word yet as to what Glover's role is in this film either, but Crispin will certainly have the biggest box office success he's had in 15 years this fall. Nurse Betty opens November 10, 2000, just one week after Charlie's Angels.
