Bob Gale talks DVD contents
"Over 10 Hours of Never-Before-Seen Footage" explained
One day after Universal Studios Home Video issues a formal press release regarding the highly anticipated Back to the Future Trilogy DVD release, Writer/Producer Bob Gale clarifies some of the wording in the press release to avoid consumer confusion & disappointment.
"The claim that there is 'over 10 hours of never before seen bonus materials' is a bit of an exaggeration: they're including the commentaries (there are two for each film a general commentary from a Q&A session Bob and I did at USC, and a more scene specific commentary I recorded with Neil Canton), " informs Gale. "Yes, there are over 10 hours of bonus materials, but as should be obvious to anyone, the commentaries are not 'seen'."
Bob wanted to reiterate to fans that the international versions of the boxed-set will not contain all of the bonus materials that the domestic release will have. "We are still finding more material to include in the domestic package, while the international version has already been put to bed," Gale reveals. "Universal is very committed to putting out the best possible collection of supplements for the U.S. release, so the extra few months of waiting time will be worth it."
Anyone who may be planning to hold off purchasing this new set in anticipation of Universal releasing the trilogy set again a year or so down the road as an "Ultimate Edition" with even more features can stop holding their breath now.
"I sincerely doubt there will be an 'ultimate' edition down the line, " exclaims Gale. "We're trying to make this set the 'ultimate edition', and although some of the excluded material would be of interest to true fanatics, I honestly don't feel that it belongs in this collection. For example, I looked at that Leslie Nielsen stuff [the 1989 NBC "Sneak Peek" special for Back to the Future Part II] a couple of months ago, and I can't imagine why anyone would want to watch it it's just not that good!"
Bob seems to be taking full advantage of the extra time between the domestic & international releases. He tells me that they're still unearthing materials for the domestic release, having recently found a few radio spots for all three films which will be included as well. He's currently going through about six hours of footage just from Back to the Future Part II, which apparently contains some additional deleted scenes that may also be considered for inclusion.
Christmas 2002 just may go down as one of the best holidays of all time!
Entertainment Tonight tantalizes fans with DVD peek
Unfortunately, we didn't know in advance that Entertainment Tonight was going to air a brief preview last night of two of the upcoming DVD features.
Among the two scenes previewed, an outtake of Michael J. Fox drinking from Lorraine's whiskey flask in Back to the Future as well as a look at the "Hoverboard Test" feature from Back to the Future Part II with stuntmen testing out the hoverboards in an open field were previewed.
A small Quicktime clip (1.3 MB) of the segment is available here, thanks to a BTTF.com reader who generously sent in the clip for those of us who missed it. Check it out. [Thanks to "James" for the clip!]
Length of DVD features unveiled on BBFC website
Thanks to the British Board of Film Classification website, we now know the timings of some of the international features on the upcoming DVD release for the U.K. (and presumably, all other territories outside the U.S.).
All of the following features were submitted to the BBFC on June 19, receiving a certificate of either "PG" or "U" and passing without any cuts:
- Back to the Future Deleted Scenes (7m 16s)
- Back to the Future Outtakes (2m 42s)
- Back to the Future Making the Trilogy - Chapter 1 (15m 28s)
- Back to the Future Makeup Test - Minus Crispin Glover (2m 16s)
- Back to the Future 2 Deleted Scenes (3m 7s)
- Back to the Future 2 Outtakes (0m 48s)
- Back to the Future 2 Hoverboard Tests (0m 56s)
- Back to the Future 2 Storyboards to Final Feature Comparisons (2m 52s)
- Back to the Future 3 ZZ Top "Doubleback" Music Video (4m 6s)
- Back to the Future 3 Making the Trilogy - Chapter 3 (16m 17s)
Obviously, this is not all of the features contained on the set, and more will apparently be submitted soon to the board for approval. But this gives us a good idea of what to expect when we first pop the discs into our DVD players. [Thanks to "Jig" for the link!]
Summer Interstate 60 screenings headed our way
Bob Gale has informed us that his upcoming film Interstate 60 will be screened next month on July 27 in St. Louis for an event connected with the St. Louis Film Festival. This screening will be part of the Second Annual St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase taking place at Webster University between Tuesday, July 23 and Sunday, July 28. The screening will take place in the distinctive Winifred Moore Auditorium.
Can't make it to St. Louis next month? Never fear Bob tells me that the film will also be screened on August 2 at this year's San Diego Comic Convention. He'll also be in attendance at both events to do Q&A sessions after each screening.

DVDs set for release in Korea beginning December 3
A representative from Universal Pictures Korea tells BTTF.com that they will release a sell-thru only DVD Box Set on December 3, 2002 containing all three films. Artwork & features are basically the same as other international releases (Digipack, Outbox & Booklet).
A premiere to the DVD Prime (an on-line community and opinion leader group in Korea) will take place on December 25th as a Christmas celebration. Pre-orders will be be available on-line via DVD shopping malls approximately two months ahead of the street date.
On the same date, the company will also release the first Back to the Future as a separate disc. Package artwork is still being developed, as is their specific marketing plan.
