Spielberg wins Oscar
Last night at the Oscars...
Steven Spielberg won his third Oscar last night for directing Saving Private Ryan. "Am I allowed to say I really wanted this?", he asked in his acceptance speech. I think it was fairly obvious, Steve it goes without saying. He thanked his dad, to whom he dedicated the trophy. He had said previously that he made Ryan for his dad. I wonder how many films he's going to have to make to satisfy everyone else in his family? He's said before that he made Schindler's List for his mom, which he also won a Best Director Oscar for. You know now his wife, Kate Capshaw, is going to feel left out, so now he's got to make a film and win an Oscar for her. And then, he's got seven kids I think he'll be busy for a while...
Did you see Tom Hanks last night? He was sporting a beard for his role in Robert Zemeckis' film Cast Away, which is in production now. Zemeckis & Hanks should be wrapping the first half of the film up soon before taking the much publicized break so that Tom can lose the 40+ pounds needed for the role. During that time, Zemeckis will head off to Vermont in September to direct Harrison Ford & Michelle Pfeiffer in the thriller What Lies Beneath. Hanks & Zemeckis are scheduled to resume production on Cast Away next March.
Last night's Oscar winning actress, Gwyneth Paltrow, just finished shooting Duets on March 17 with veteran rocker Huey Lewis. According to USA Today, Huey plays dad to Gwyneth's character, a third-generation Vegas chorus girl. Lewis and Gwyneth sing in the film as well, teaming on the song "Cruisin'", an old Smokey Robinson tune. The film will be Lewis' biggest role to date, and marks the first time he's carried a tune on film. Duets is expected for release this Fall.
Elsewhere in Hill Valley...
Christopher Lloyd's latest film, Baby Geniuses continues to do modest business, drawing another $4.5 million over the weekend. The comedy has taken in approximately $12 million in the last 10 days, despite critical reviews. His other film in release, My Favorite Martian, seems destined to wind up with about $35 million in the U.S.
The "Red Rocker" Sammy Hagar ("I Can't Drive 55") has a new album on MCA Records "Red Voodoo". It's scheduled to be released tomorrow (March 23), and is his second solo effort since leaving Van Halen.
