Spielberg leaving DreamWorks?
Spielberg denies reports of leaving studio
Cinescape and Mr. Showbiz reported yesterday that Steven Spielberg is disputing rumors and the recent report in Time magazine that he's planning on leaving DreamWorks SKG, the studio he co-founded just 4½ years ago. Spielberg stated that he has no intention of dropping the "S" out of "SKG" anytime soon, and that he is "unequivocally devoted" to the company.
There does seem, however, to be truth to the report that he intends to revive Amblin Entertainment, the production company he started in 1982 with Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall. In recent years, conflicting reports seemed to indicate that Amblin would eventually cease to exist once all film projects they were under contract to produce had been completed, being consumed into DreamWorks. However, in the past year, several new projects including the upcoming feature The Flintstones in Viva Las Vegas and reportedly another Casper feature have emerged from Amblin, and there are several projects still remaining on their production slate. If all this proves to be true, it could very well mean really good news for the Back to the Future franchise.
There is, however, no truth to the rumor that DreamWorks will merge with Universal. According to Variety, DreamWorks just secured the 47-acres in Playa Vista on Monday in which to build the new studio, scheduled to be completed in 2001. DreamWorks and Amblin are both presently located at Universal Studios in Hollywood.
Spielberg to executive produce Sci-Fi Channel mini-series
Meanwhile in other Spielberg news, Variety reported this morning that he will executive produce a 20-hour miniseries for the Sci-Fi Channel called Taken, which focuses on alien abductions dating back to 1947 and spanning several decades. The $40-million production is scheduled to begin this Summer, for a projected Fall 2000 debut.
