Is BTTF4 finally in the works?!; A new DeLorean too?
New developments in long-awaited sequel
Whoa! Finally, there's been some word on the possibility of a new sequel! According to the June 1999 issue of Total Film magazine (page 41), a new sequel is rumored to be on the drawing board. Here's word-for-word what the article claims:
Fancy going back to Back To The Future... again? Well, Amblin Entertainment and Universal Pictures are rumored to be considering a revival of their time-travel franchise. Men In Black scribe Ed Solomon is reportedly working on a script dealing with Christopher Lloyd's Doc Brown causing the Roswell UFO crash and how he sets it straight, with the assistance of would-be scientist Sarah Michelle Gellar. Steven Spielberg and Solomon would act as executive producers while Michael J. Fox may cameo as another ancestor of Marty McFly.
Okay now. This is by far the most detailed rumor we've seen or heard yet on a sequel. Never before had there been any plotlines revealed or specific names of actors mentioned for parts. There are several interesting additions here, as well as omissions. Ed Solomon is certainly no stranger to sci-fi or time travel, having penned scripts for both Bill & Ted movies, as well as Men in Black and the upcoming X-Men feature film. Sarah Michelle Gellar, best known for her starring role on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, may be a bit of a stretch as a scientist assistant to Doc, but she is an interesting choice nonetheless.
Oddly enough though, there is no mention whatsoever of other key players, especially Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale. I personally do not see a sequel without their involvement in some capacity. The article does not name a director, but it's always been highly doubtful that Zemeckis would direct another one. I would expect to see their names attached as executive producers to the film at the very least. Interestingly enough, while doing some research on Ed Solomon, I discovered that he has worked with Bob Gale in the recent past. Bob Gale has a script in development at Sony/TriStar for a live-action/animated feature film called Barnaby, in which Ed Solomon co-wrote with Gale. Both men were brought on to the project in August 1995, and the project continues to be in perpetual development.
It is quite interesting to see Steven Spielberg's name attached to the project, as well as Amblin's name as the production company. As mentioned in a previous "Back Talk", Spielberg has recently revived Amblin for new projects, and this rumor certainly fits within the realms of this new reality. Naturally, we know that we cannot have a new Future without Christopher Lloyd, as he has been a part of every BTTF project to date. Glad to see Michael J. Fox's name also mentioned, even if it is as a secondary or cameo role. I suspect that if the project does come to light, we'll see Fox's participation expanded beyond a cameo.
As of this writing, this is all we know about the project. Rest assured, we'll be checking into our sources in attempt to verify these rumors. As soon as we know more, we'll post them here and on our BTTF4 page. [A very special thanks to 'Sam' in the U.K. for the scoop!!!]
New DeLorean automobile also becoming a reality
The Associated Press is confirming today what we've known for a while now John Z. DeLorean has a sequel of his own planned. Interestingly enough, the `D2' this time will be made out of "structural plastic" instead of stainless steel, so who knows what Doc Brown will use as a time machine in the next film. What Lies Beneath extras being considered
According to 'Renee', who recently showed up in Burlington, Vermont at a casting call for extras in Jim Carrey's next film (which I'm assuming is "How the Grinch Stole Christmas"), Casting Director Kevin Fennessy told a croud of 2,600 people this past Saturday and Sunday that they would be choosing 800 to appear in Carrey's film. Anyone who submitted photos and met with the casting director were told that they would also be considered for Robert Zemeckis' next film, What Lies Beneath with Harrison Ford, set to film this August in Vermont.
Amblin planning Little Rascals sequel
According to the Dark Horizons website, a sequel to 1994's The Little Rascals, which co-starred Lea Thompson, is also being planned by Amblin. No word yet as to whether Lea will reprise her role as "Ms. Roberts".
