Although he did talk about going back to see the signing of the declaration of independence, the old west, so maybe? who knows?

However, he was always so paranoid about changing history and events, he was forever chastising Marty about doing that, altering history.

Maybe his curiosity would get the better of him and he wanted to go back to experience the ship first hand.
