 I dont think any of it was 'lame' or an example of 'laziness'. They were making fun of what the future could be (expressed in interviews)

Also- what/where is this mailbox with a video monitor? something I must have somehow missed all these years

I think the way they created the future was absolutely perfect, like making fun of the Jaws Sequels with 'Jaws 19', the "not very well done" nostalgic cafe 80's and the absurd fashion (which is turning into a reality...). Not to mention a lot of the technologies they foreseen are infact available now or are being developed. I think they did a marvelous job.

 

Also, who's to say their idea of the future didn't include the internet?!
