Have people been making fun of you because you LOVE the BTTF?

out of a deloreon..... Joined: 08/20/2010	Have you ever been made fun of because you are a BTTF fan? Don't you feel that: 1. People get bored of you because you can't stop talking about it. 2. You want a friend that LOVES the BTTF as much as you. 3. You start hating the BTTF itself so you can get your friends back. I know I've been in that situation. But I've never hated it just so I could get those friends back. Your real friends are those who really respect what you like. But just so you know, all of us in the BTTF are definetly fans ( if your not I suggest you get out!) So we all respect you choise. And to all of you here, GOOD CHOISE! ;)

A flying DeLorean?	I'm probably a bigger Ghostbusters fan then I am of BTTF. And while their may have been the occasional joke about liking either film since I was a kid too much (especially with GBs as I own a costume, run a fan website, etc) I've never been made fun of for liking a movie. I guess it depends on how old the people in this situation are. I've found in the past (no pun intended) that teens and older who might not seem like they're into either of the film franchises turn out to love them both. Its usually because of a reference to the films or just saying a quote. Regardless they're movies. Its pretty stupid to be made fun of for enjoying a movie a lot. If the tables were turned, their are probably films those people love that you don't. Different strokes for different folks.

Now, I have a number of friends, thanks to this very message board, who do understand and if I feel the need to discuss BTTF in-depth or quote it all night long, I know I can happily do that with them and there'll be no eye-rolling. Perhaps with time you will understand. I am guessing you are a relatively new BTTF fan. I understand the passion & the urgency, but believe me, you don't want to lose friends over this. I tried (unsuccessfully!) for about 5 years to get one of by best friends to become a BTTF & Michael J Fox fan until one day I realised that it's none of my business who she does and doesn't like so now I leave her in peace about it! LOL!

I do have a few friends who like the trilogy, but not love it as much as I do. But I get the same treatment as you do sometimes, and it does bug me. I do get embarrased sometimes when BTTF gets mentioned, as if everyone is suddenly looking at me (OK, sometimes they do!). :) I don't bring BTTF up in conversations myself, apart from the occasional quote (and it must be relevant to the conversation as well), but if it gets brought up by someone else, I will quite happily join in! :) Basically, I do have a few people making fun of me for liking the films - oddly, I never hear of Star Wars or LOTR fans getting made fun of..... But I can laugh it off, I don't get very upset when someone insults the films, since it is their choice not to like them, but I do try and give them my point of view as well. ;)

I completely agree! I spend many happy hours here just talking about BTTF, and it's nice to meet fellow fans who don't have to have everything explained, or would quite happily join in conversations such as "What if Jennifer went to 1955 instead of Marty?" or when hoverboards could have been invented.

Once more, I agree. I don't try and "convert" my friends and family to BTTF fans because it's none of my business. Plus, that way I get to keep BTTF to myself and not have to share it with them! LOL.

Couldn't have said it better myself. :) I admit, when I hear people (especially those around my age) "dissing" things I like -- such as BTTF, 8-bit Nintendo, 80's music, Full House, etc -- it kinda annoys me sometimes. But, you know what? Since I tend to have a sunny, laid back and friendly personality, I always try to see the good in everything. Don't mistake me, I have quite a few acquaintences/friends who like the movies, but mostly on a "casual fan" level. In other words, they'll watch and enjoy the Trilogy, but it mostly ends there. The minute I start randomly quoting it when we hang out, or talk about what year did the Cafe 80's open, their eyes glaze over and I get an, Oh God, here he goes again look, LOL. ;)

Still Fluxing Joined: 08/20/2010	Im not going to get all political on my answer... Really no... alot of people really just dont care. If i do get the ocassional razzing from friends, i just turn it around on something they like and they pretty much shut up because they see how annoying their jokes are. One of my friends loves Mitsubishi Starions. A good 80's sports car with issues. I have a thing for DeLoreans (beyond BTTF, sorry). He'll razz me for the choice of cars, but then i'll razz him about starions and we pretty much just laugh it off. Life lesson: You cant make everyone like what you like. That's what makes being a fan all that more enjoyable.

I enjoy the movies and occasionally make a reference quote ( at an approprate time ) as a joke. But I do that for lots of movies. I guess I'm grounded in realizing it's just a movie. A fun movie, but just a movie. My life doesn't revolve around it, or anything else ( except Jesus ) to the point that I get called out on it.

Many ASPECTS may be intriguing. Try talking to them about the Delorean, or time travel therories. Something like that must spark their intrest, I mean, they are your friends, they must've something in common with you..... Most of my friends have either: a) Never seen it and have no clue whatsoever what I'm talking about or b) Have seen it and liked it. I don't know anyone who doesn't like it or gets annoyed with me for talking about it all the time. They will maybe get a TINY bit tired of it, but they don't care. No matter what your friends think, you should never try to change what you like or how you act to get them to accept you. If they don't like you for who you are, i suggest you find new friends.

Statler Motors Joined: 08/20/2010	Once at work a music "expert" was showing his lack of knowledge. He never even heard of Chuck Berry. I remarked that he probably didn't get the joke in BTTF. He looked at me and said he would never watch a movie like that. I shut up as he wasn't worth talking to and he laughed because he thought I was too embarrased about liking a movie such as that. He was fired for theft a couple of weeks later.

What irks me is that most of the people who tease me problably have never even seen the films, have no idea who MJF or Chris Lloyd are, and have no idea what a DeLorean is...people can be so ignorant. Just cause it's from the 80s doesn't mean it's not cool!!:mad: :(

Well I still get made fun of now and then, but people have gotten used to it by now. In my drama class, we had this thing called question of the day, and whenever it came time for me to answer the question, no matter what it was, someone ALWAYS shouted out: "BACK TO THE FUTURE!" So I'm used to it. Although my girlfriend is also a huge Dr. Who fanatic, so naturally she loved BTTF when I made her watch it (likewise, I'm now a Dr. Who fan), so she's about the only one who puts up with it (actually, she applauds it), so I'm really glad I have her, because none of my past girlfriends really liked BTTF, so the fact that she is also a fan is great! :) Although even she thought I was a moron when I told her I purchased a standee from Stephen for $200 (I personally don't see why that's so outrageous :confused: ), and everyone else feels the same way, but oh well, I've wanted one for a while so I say it's worth it :)

My cousin likes bttf, but isn't at the level of intrest and knowledge that i am, I consider myself to be at an exteme level of intrest of bttf, i know i only just joined the site but i have been intensley researched bttf for 12 years, and the ride for 7 years. so i consider myself a very big fan, as i am very loyal and devoted to the phenomena of to me the best 3 movies cartoon series amuesment park ride and website ever made.

Anyway I've never been made fun of for liking Bttf, probably because it's too cool and can't be made fun of because of it's awesomeness.

I grew up watching these films, watching them is probably one of the longest running traditions I have in my life and obviously I love them a lot, but I rarely bring anything up about the movie around friends. They all know I'm a big fan and I'll talk their ears off about it if they want me to, but instead I always left it all here where others would appreciate my input and ideas rather than roll their eyes. :)

LOUDO Joined: 11/16/2007 Posts: 56	I have always loved the movies and grew up watching them and in fact when number 2 came out was when I went through a rather difficult part of my life, basically when my parents got divorced so i kinda feel these movies got me through a tough patch and also remind me of my childhood etc Because I am English and live in the U.K etc I would say I have it harder than you guys in the USA as here you really have to want to be a fan here , for instance I thought I was the only one who loved the movies still until I discovered this website last year (which i didn't know even exsisted) and realised i am not the only one! My mates call me a geek all the time for loving these movies when in fact most of them are a simular age to me and love Star Wars etc, and in my opinion Star Wars is overated and nowhere near as clever as the BTTF Trilogy, when my mates take the P*** out of me for loving the movies I just say to them how can you not love something that was probably one of the highest grossing movies of all time, hundreds of thousands of people like the movies still now otherwise Universal wouldn't be bringing it out on Blue Ray also most of my mates remember the movies by just either don't get it or can't remember much about them, which is sad The fact of the matter is that it's horses for courses each to their own, but in the U.K BTTF fans are hard to come by and I think I will start a thread asking whether or not there are any BTTF like me in Oxfordshire England as I have not found one but there must be, any of you lot live in the U.K or anyway near Oxford as it would be really good to meet up and share our love for the movie? in fact I have a mate with a large projector screen for a possible screening etc let me know

I have not even mentioned anything about Bttf in months. Well just another day in the life of an unpopular kid. Geez! Don't they have anything better to do than make fun of me? Cant they concentrate on something more important like GRADES MAYBE??!! Sorry I needed to tell someone.:):D ---Mike
